The name Namib, originating from the Nama language, aptly describes this desert of vast open space.
1200 km long and 140 km wide, the Namib Desert is the oldest known desert and the most extreme on earth. At its heart is Sossusvlei with its monumental red sanddunes, some of the largest and highest in the world. A once in a lifetime experience is to watch the sun rise or set over these dunes, a photographer's dream with the contrasting play of colors and contrasting shadow. The life-giving nightly fog from the cold Atlantic ocean ensures the survival of an intriguing variety of desert-adapted animals and plants including the beautiful horned oryx. At the entrance to Sossusvlei is Sesriem Canyon, gouged out of rock over many centuries by the Tsauchab River with its small pools of water, attracting many birds and animals.
