The Cape Overberg, only one and a half hours from Cape Town, is the secret "jewel" of the Cape coast. Endless white duned beaches fringed with rocky outcrops of limestone protect marine sanctuaries rich in sea life and some of South Africa's most rare animals (the Cape Bontebok) and endemic plants (Cape "fynbos") are found in its variety of nature reserves. The region is also known both as the "meeting place" of the two oceans at Cape Agulhas, the most southern point on the African continent and the guardian of the Southern Right whales, who visit each year to calf and mate in its protected bays and warm waters. Hermanus is a particular favourite with whale watchers due to its ideal vantage points from the cliff tops of Walker Bay.
